Owen Homfray

Independent for Hobart

About Me

  • I have a strong interest in land use planning, transport and politics.

  • I am a first year student at the University of Tasmania studying a Bachelor of Geospatial Science with a major in Surveying.

  • I completed year 12 last year at Hobart College.

  • I have lived in the greater Hobart area for 15 years and in South Hobart for 10.

My Position on Currently Relevant Topics

Housing and Planning
  • I support increasing the density of our cities to ensure people are closer to higher quality services and amenities such as shops, healthcare, education and public transport.

  • I support encouraging changes to the state planning scheme to allow denser housing in areas with access to high quality amenities. Having our highest density housing zone limit heights to 9.5m (3 storeys) is not good enough in the middle of a housing crisis, we should be encouraging developments 4-6 storeys high where appropriate.

  • I support removing minimum lot sizes from the inner residential and urban mixed use zones.

  • I support the removal of minimum parking requirements to bring housing prices down and encourage the use of active and public transportation, residents and businesses can decide for the themselves how much parking they'll actually need.

  • I am strongly against expanding Hobart's Urban Growth Boundary as has recently happened and I am against continuing our cities' suburban sprawl.

  • I support including New Norfolk and Huonville/Ranelagh in Hobart's urban growth boundary to prevent them from becoming sprawling satellite suburbs.

Transport
  • I am a big supporter of improving public and active transport options in Tasmania.

  • I strongly support light rail on the Northern Suburbs Transit Corridor and believe a bus rapid transit line would not provide anywhere near the same level of community benefit.

  • I support the addition of bus lanes.

  • I support the construction of a new bus interchange in Hobart's CBD, be it a dedicated site or on-street in a different location, our current bus interchange is not well-designed for efficiency or user experience.

  • I generally oppose the widening of roads and highways as this simply induces more demand.
